The last themed weekend of this season has passed by.
On Saturday, September 25, 2021, we took a walk along the Path of Springs, which this time should be called the Path of Dry Springs. Due to the long-lasting drought, they are all drained. Even the emerald spring Cemun completely dried up, which last happened in 2003. But the trip was no less interesting. The excellent guide Alenka Veber, originally from Babno polje, led a diverse group of participants past caves, abysses, stone openings and holes, from which water otherwise gushes and fills Lake Cerknica.
They admired the more than a hundred-year-old maklen tree, an old pear tree avenue, they walked along the dried-out Stržena riverbed, and the most delighted were the meadow, all purple sprinkled with autumn undergrowth. At the end of the route they also visited the ancient church of St. Bricitus. To conclude, they also visited the T´Dolenj farm, where they have a collection of old tools, a granary from 1746 and a Venetian sawmill. After a visit and an interesting explanation by the local daughter Katarina, socializing followed, a delicious snack prepared at home and a tasting of the products offered on this farm, known for excellent fruit products (juices, jams, liqueurs, vinegar…).
On Sunday, the participants of the thematic activity went on the Drvošec Theme Trail by Lake Cerknica with an exceptional bird connoisseur. This intermittent Cerknica Lake is a real magnet for birds. So far, 272 different birds have been spotted here, which is half of all species living in Europe! The changing image of the landscape offers us a unique opportunity to observe birds in their daily tasks at any time of the year. It is currently the beginning of migration, so this is a great time to spot a wide variety of feathered creatures. Ornithologist Eva Vukelič took visitors through the sounds of birds singing to the newly built observatories Kuharca and Klejni vrh (the total length of the walk was c.c.a. 2.5 km). During the walk, they stopped, listened and combed the largest, currently completely dry Slovenian lake with binoculars and spectacles, and drove back to the starting point in a horse-drawn carriage.
All weekend activities are financed by the LIFE Stržen project, and are free of charge for the participants.
