The almost 4-kilometer-long Educational Trail Drvošec, built by the park thanks to the LIFE Stržen project, which includes 3 bird observatories and a series of interactive info points, is running along Lake Cerknica. The path runs along a slightly elevated terrain and thus offers some beautiful views of the intermittent lake, of the “whitch mountain” of Slivnica and of its wider surroundings.

The food web. Look through the holes and find out who is eating whom. A wonderful circle of life in nature, with everything being in the right place. Photo by NRP

Along the Drvošec trail you are guided by a symbol of the Bittern bird – a mysterious heron, which is almost impossible to see and in Slovenia only nests on Lake Cerknica. Photo by NRP
It is an easy footpath, suitable for all generations. The children are especially enthusiastic about the animal points on it (the lynx climber, the bear and wolf silhouettes, the holes in the food web). The visitors can walk along the path at any time. Due to the change of seasons and the changes of water level and size of the lake, the trail offers different experience each time. In the Summer, the Notranjska Park also organizes guided hikes along the way, cooperating with the locals; a local housewife Lili Mahne is waiting somewhere along the way with a snack prepared from the ingredients of nature, a farmer Frenk or the owner of the Tourist Farm Kontrabantar are ready with a horse-drawn wooden carriage, to give a lift to a tired hiker.

We are happy to have received the award, as it confirms that our work is going in the right direction – this has been confirmed by the professionals and by visitors who are seen visiting our new trail on daily basis.
Building of new infrastructure has also been made possible thanks to financial support of the Municipality of Cerknica and the local companies Elgoline, EBMPapst and Alpod.
The park thanks the persistent workers of the Proform company, which made and installed everything that`s made of wood on the trail. A heartfelt thank you goes to our diligent outdoor workers: to Lojz, who dug out the trail, and together with Andrej and Izak cleaned and mowed it, cut down trees and undergrowth beside it, a hundred times. Thank you all the designers, architects, creators of the visual image of our path. Thanks also to the visitors who tell us daily how they enjoy the walk there. Thanks also to everyone for the critical words that have stimulated and will continue to stimulate us to make improvements.
You are invited to take a walk at the winning trail, which, by changing of the seasons and of the lake, offers a different image every time and therefore always gives you a fresh experience!

Breathtaking view from one of the observatories. If you have binoculars or a spotlight, you can also see a colorful crowd of different birds. More than 270 different ones have been spotted on the lake so far. Photo by Eva Kobe

View from the Orlek observatory. Tranquility on Lake Cerknica. On first sight. A look through the binoculars reveals the birdsong, the ripples of the reeds in the wind, the slight murmur of the springs of Lake Cerknica. Photo by Eva Kobe
