At the end of May Lake Cerknica will be the venue for many adventures for all generations. Between 22nd and 25th of May 2019, the activities in the surroundings of Lake Cerknica will take place on the water, in the underground caves, on the hilltops and in the unspoiled nature of the nature park. Through a thousand experiences you will be able to ride a boat, a hay carriage, a bicycle, in a pony saddle, on the wings of a bird or walk on foot. The Lake Adventure begins on Wednesday night, with an outdoor cinema that will also take place on Thursday and on Friday evening.
On Wednesday evening, outside the Krpan’s Gallery, the multi-award-winning Icelandic film Woman at War will open the Days of the Park.
The highlight of the event will be Saturday, 25th of May – a day full of activities (made possible by the Life Stržen project). The main event area next to the parking lot in Dolenje Jezero will feature the stalls from 8 am, featuring local vendors and artisans, and will be the starting point for most activities. There will also be a LIFE booth at Rešeto. Life Lynx, Life For Lasca and Life Naturaviva projects will also have their corners by the lake.
Since May is the month of love, we will of course bow to her. We will present the tragic love story between the region of Notranjska’s Romeo and Juliet, a Šteberg castle boy and a Karlovec castle girl. They were passionately attracted to each other and in love, despite the deadly hatred between their families. In order to have her as a wife, Šteberčan would have to come by boat for his love’s hand. That was her father’s impossible condition. Impossible, because there was no water, only land all around. What to do? With the help of Jezerko, the lakes’s merman, Šteberg guy managed to create a lake. But there was still no marriage, only secret meetings and the growth of love, which ended tragically – with the sad death first of the young Šteberg boy, and then of his beloved. Both were swallowed by the sinkhole in the Karlovica underground. We will take you to this karst cave by boat on Saturday (at 3 pm) and by the way we will stop by the places of love meetings of our lovers and their home castles. A walking excursion will also be organized there (at 8 am).
The beauty of the lake, which, according to the legend, was born out of the unrequited love, can also be admired from the hay carriage, a traditional horse-drawn farm carriage. It will take you to a panoramic trip from 2 pm to 4 pm every half hour.
Because of the heavy rainfall in May we have the Lake (except when we don’t have it because it dries out, Lojz of the Carnival would say), we also organize a number of other activities along the lake. Visitors will be able to observe and ring birds (between 8 and 10 am) with an ornithologist, as there are more than 270 different bird species on Lake Cerknica. Bee lovers will be able to go down the bees’ educational path and taste some of their sweet honey (at 11 am). The fit ones will be offered a guided bike tour to Rakov Škocjan (at 10 am). There will also be a bunch of interesting workshops suitable for all ages, and throughout the day anyone will be able to rent canoes or bicycles, participate in archery or scout training, or paint with nature dyes.
The Days of the park will end with a party – the concerts of the untamed rapper Smaal Tokk, the mild-sounding Voice up! and the entertaining band of Šlajni.
